Kristjan Loftsson, Iceland's modern-day Captain Ahab, is obsessed with killing endangered fin whales.

Loftsson’s company Hvalur hf was started in 1947 by his father, Loftur Bjarnason, and his father’s friend, Vilhjálmur Árnason. They purchased a Navy base in 1948 and converted it into a whaling station. Eventually, their sons took over the company.

As the whaling season was set to begin this past summer, the crew aboard the M/Y John Paul DeJoria were nearby and ready to be in the frontlines to protect the lives of whales for OPERATION PAIAKAN. However, Iceland's Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture placed a temporary halt on the whaling season.
