Burning Man: The Musical is a satirical musical about the tech 1% trying to take over Burning Man. Written in the musical comedy tradition of The Book of Mormon, the film follows Molly, a promising young tech grad, as she returns to the playa—this time employed by the very tech company that, unbeknownst to her, seeks to destroy it. After being given the task of acquiring drugs for her boss's exclusive party, Molly finds herself on a journey inward—and through the community of Burning Man—finds her truest self.
This film of the live theatrical experience, filmed on a soundstage with 10 Broadway and veteran actors, is 80 minutes long.

A burner since 2015, Matt Werner was inspired to write Burning Man: The Musical based on stories his oldest sister would share from attending Burning Man since the 1990s. An Oakland, California native, Matt is a graduate of UC Berkeley and former writer at McSweeney's. Matt hopes this film will serve as a proof-of-concept for the musical and inspire others to join him in creating a full-scale immersive production of this musical on the playa in future years.
