SPEAKER BIO

Xavia A. Publius (she/her or ze/hir) is in hir 5th year of a PhD in Performance Studies at the University of Alberta in Amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton), Treaty 6 and Métis Region #4 territory. Ze received hir BA in Music with a minor in LGBTQ Studies from Colgate University and hir MA in Women’s and Gender Studies from the University of Northern Iowa.

Hir Bachelor’s thesis examined gender and sexuality in the vocal performances on Glee, while hir Master’s thesis, Suggestions for Transgender Inclusion in Classical Music: A Mini-Cycle, examined hir experiences as a trans woman in choral settings. Hir current research is on fandom ethics and queer representation.

Originally from a small town in central Pennsylvania, Xavia has been an advocate and educator around queer issues for over a decade. She has been involved in musical theatre since elementary school and is an amateur composer. Her drag persona Lady Xaxa Trudeaux allows her to play with understandings of gender and desire in performance.

She is active in several media fandoms and writes fanfiction that often centres trans readings of stories. She has also taken up crochet in her spare time.

MUSICIAN BIO

B.A. Johnston lives with his mother in Hamilton, Ontario. He only leaves the house to play shows, work as a fry cook, and to go on sporadic dates that his mom gets for him at her hair salon. He plays sad weird songs about deep frying, pirates, poutine and love on his trusty keyboards and guitar. He also has some cool dance moves and stuff. He has released 6 albums and has spent the last 8 years touring the country on the bus.

He has shared the stage with acts like the rheostatics, the constantines, cuff the duke, the silverhearts, the guthries, joel plaskett and tons more, and has toured the country supporting immaculate machine, mayor mcca and falconhawk. He has played such high profile smooze fests like Halifax Pop, Close to the Coast (Charlottetown) and Ranchfest (Vancouver). He hopes one day to be rich and famous, buy a deep fryer for his room, and finally dance with a girl when Stairway to Heaven is the last song of the night.
