NYU SPS Academy of Lifelong Learning: The Art of Looking at Art
February 26 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm EST
Join the Center for Applied Liberal Arts Noncredit and the Academy of Lifelong Learning at the NYU School of Professional Studies in a conversation with artist and author Gene Wisniewski about his latest book The Art of Looking at Art, a concise, readable guide to understanding art for everyone from art lovers to the merely curious. Wisniewski’s first full-length book reflects his extensive experience as a working artist, art instructor, art history lecturer, and writer, and promises to offer unique insights into the art-viewing experience.
About the book: There are art history books, and books on art appreciation. There are essays on creativity, scientific treatises on art and the human brain, and stories in the news about record-breaking sales. But The Art of Looking At Art puts everything you always wanted to know about this vast and sometimes baffling subject into one succinct, accessible, and, yes, entertaining read. This book examines art from every conceivable angle—the philosophical, the functional, and the financial. Discover what goes into making a painting, and what goes on in an artist’s head. Explore an ancient cave at the tip of Africa where, for reasons unknown, our hunter-gatherer ancestors first carved geometric patterns into bits of rock, then pop in at New York’s high-end auction houses, where fortunes are dropped at the raise of a paddle. Learn how to really look at art. The book’s lively, conversational tone makes the most difficult art comprehensible, even for the neophyte. Though this is a book for the aficionado, too. Because, as any aficionado will tell you, no matter how much you know about this vast and ever-fascinating topic, there’s always something new to learn. Any questions? The answer is probably here.
Gene Wisniewski received his art education at Rutgers University, the New York Academy of Art, The National Academy of Design, The New School, and L’Ecole Albert Defois in Vihiers, France. He has exhibited in galleries nationwide, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. His short stories have appeared in Exquisite Corpse: A Journal of Letters and Life, Satellite magazine, and other publications. The Art of Looking at Art is his first full-length book. He is currently working on screenplay adaptations based on two of his published short stories. He has twenty years’ experience teaching and lecturing on visual art. At the NYU SPS Academy of Lifelong Learning, Wisniewski is teaching the course Seeing Things Our Way: Art as Propaganda this spring. Order the book from Rowman and Littlefield Publishers , Bookshop , or Amazon.
