Clara Engel is a prolific and multi-faceted Toronto-based artist. They have collaborated with musicians and artists from the UK, Germany, Brazil, Canada, Turkey, Iran, and the US. Engel’s music has been featured on Italian National Radio, as well as BBC Radio 2, and in 2013 they composed the music for the short film “We Are Not Here” by Aaron Mirkin. A dance piece by Odeón Círculo Escénico, set to a song from Engel’s 2017 album “Songs for Leonora Carrington” is currently in the works, and will be featured as an on-site performance at the Leonora Carrington Museum in Mexico in autumn of 2021. Engel’s music has been described as “folk noir,” and “minimalist holy blues from another galaxy.” Their influences span genres and media, amongst them are Vasko Popa, Virginia Woolf, Theodore Roethke, Jim Jarmusch, Arvo Part, Robert Johnson, Gillian Welch, and Jacques Brel.
Clara will be joined by Paul Kolinski on percussion.
