Impressionists film screening and live Q&A with Director Phil Grabsky

With kind permission from Seventh Art Productions, BNJC presents a screening of the acclaimed art film, The Impressionists and The Man Who Made Them. Through the film, director Phil Grabsky will take us on a journey to learn how the 19th-century art collector Paul Durand-Ruel was key in popularising impressionism worldwide, and how he helped save it when it faced failure.
Following the screening, we will be hosting a live Q&A discussion with the Brighton-based director Phil Grabsky and Flavie Durand-Ruel, the great great-granddaughter of the legendary art dealer Durand-Ruel. On the night, you will have a chance to submit your questions for either speaker to address.
About the film
Monet, Cezanne, Degas and Renoir are some of the world’s most popular artists. But who were they and how exactly did they paint? To help answer these questions, this film focuses on the man credited with inventing impressionism as we know it, the 19th-century Parisian art collector Paul Durand-Ruel. It was his brave decision to back these radical artists by exhibiting their art in New York in 1886 that kept impressionism alive at a time when it faced complete failure. This energetic and revealing film will tell his remarkable story along with that of the Impressionists themselves.
