DRAWING MUSIC: Live Improvisation and Drawing
April 8 @ 6:30 pm - 7:45 pm BST
We are so excited to be able to bring you this incredible collaboration with the Thinking Minds Project in which we will combine the wonder of music with the power of drawing!
‘Perhaps art is just taking out what you don’t like and putting in what you do. There is no such thing as abstraction. It is extraction, gravitation towards a certain direction…It is nearer to music of the ears, just the music of the eyes’ Arthur Dove
There is a long history of music influencing artists and inspiring a variety of responses, often acting as a catalyst for new innovations in art making.
The pursuit of artists to emulate music in painting has inspired some of the most adventurous visual art of the 20th century. Lucy McGeown will be joined by artist Noah Max , clarinettist and composer Raymond Brien and violinist Didier Osindero who will be playing live for us for the whole session, providing the musical catalyst for our drawings.
Through a series of short musical improvisations with guided drawing exercises we will work through ideas of mood, rhythm and composition as well exploring how mark making can translate the musical energy of action. This will be an exciting class where you can develop your own visual music by working through different modes of expression and playing around with different media and all this whilst enjoying the wonderful playing of our talented musicians!
Here is more about the members of The Thinking Minds Project:
Ray Brien, described as a musician ‘with great poise and understanding’, is a ‘powerful communicator through music’, as a freelance clarinettist and composer based in London, UK. Recent BBC Radio 3 performances include Birmingham Contemporary Music Festival’s Birtwistle celebration (Linoi for clarinet and piano) and the Total Immersion series of Detlev Glanert with BBC Symphony Orchestra. After winning the Hatfield and District Music Festival he has also recently performed the Nielsen Clarinet Concerto with DeHallivand Orchestra. They are artistic director of Thinking Minds Project and enjoy working just as much with new-music and improvisation as they do with solo recital repertoire.

Didier Osindero is an undergraduate violinist studying at the RNCM with a keen interest in chamber music and improvisation. He is currently a member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra’s ‘JX Band’, a collective of ten players who create their own original music. In addition to this, Didier is a violinist in the Chineke! Orchestra and Levare String Quartet. He believes music is able to express what words often cannot, and this fuels his desire to explore a range of musical genres.
Noah Max inspires hope through creativity and envisions a world where everyone feels connected through art. He champions process and facilitates collaboration through composing, conducting, painting, writing, speaking and as Creative Director of the Echo Ensemble. Noah’s music has been performed in the Royal Festival Hall, Vienna’s Musikverein and the Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room as well as featuring in Birmingham Contemporary Music Group’s At Home. His artwork has been displayed at the National Portrait Gallery and he paints for live audiences with The Thinking Minds Project. Noah is a Workshop Facilitator, Platform Speaker and Personal Coach with CTG Group.
