Comedy Writing for Film & TV
September 15 @ 6:30 pm - December 1 @ 9:00 pm BST
A 12-week online course (Zoom), 18:30 – 21:00 Thursday evenings
Comedy is a lens through which we see drama, so not only will attendees learn how to create characters and set up situations to elicit the most humour, but they’ll also come away with an understanding of the basic tenets of any drama writing.
We’ll cover how to think about story and characters from a comedy viewpoint, where to set a sitcom and how to amass a group of characters to populate it with, story development for film and why sitcom is different, creating memorably funny dialogue, and much more…
There will be a post-session email summarising each class during the 10 teaching weeks, with links to further information and set works to watch for group analysis. Weeks 11 and 12 will consist of a table read of up to 10pp of each participants work, so they can hear it off the page.
The tutor is a former BBC Comedy Producer, who produced and directed episodes of One Foot In The Grave.
She’s a wisecracking, fast-talking, slick professional with a plethora of stories and a marvellous comic pedigree. But it’s the warmth of her personality, her attention to detail and her superb way of supporting performers that makes her tops at producing comedy in all its guises. See Diane Messias now!
I learned more in two hours with Diane than I have from any book – and I’ve read most of them.
I was struck by her depth of knowledge, and her detailed notes on my script were inspiring. I’ve never come across anyone else who approaches the subject in the way she does. Diane’s a real pro who knows all the tips and tricks on how things are really done. Right on the money!
