Laura Maristany is the Associate Director for Governance program at Democracy Fund, an independent foundation working to ensure that our political system is able to withstand new challenges and deliver on its promise to the American people. Focusing on constructive politics, Laura leads the Governance program’s strategy to explore what unites us, while helping governing institutions become more diverse, inclusive, and better able to serve all Americans.
A seasoned advocate, movement and community builder with extensive Capitol Hill and policy making experience, Laura has spent her career leading efforts to develop and implement more inclusive legislative agendas and governing institutions. Through her previous roles as chief federal advocate and Director of the Washington, D.C. office for the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO), as Executive Director of Legislative Affairs for the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU), and in Congress, Laura played a key role in promoting a more representative democracy.
Laura is a recipient of the Grand Cross of the Order of Civil Merit bestowed by the Spanish Crown. She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez Campus and a master’s degree in international commerce and policy from George Mason University.
